Express it All
“From the depths of despair, O Lord, I call for your help. Hear my cry, O Lord. Pay attention to my prayer. Lord, if you kept a record of our sins, who, O Lord, could ever survive? But you offer forgiveness, that we might learn to fear you” (Psalm 130:1-4).
Notice how the psalmist talks with God — with passion, specificity, and emotion. Yes, that’s right, full emotion. There’s nothing placid or stoic about his expressions, questions, or intonations. So I’m wondering why do we sanitize ours? Why do we pray politely?
The thing is, God wants us to use our full emotional voice in its entirety when we speak with Him. This is how He created us, with the ability to think and feel. To communicate. To express to Him the full range of our emotions. Not just the ones we think are socially acceptable or that we think He’ll approve.
Recently, I heard a pastor say, “God is not fragile.” I couldn’t agree more! He’s not. So let’s stop talking to Him like He is. Like the psalmist, let’s express everything we’re thinking and feeling to God, in the moment, as we talk with Him.
