Does God Hesitate Relationally?
Does God hesitate relationally with us? Drag His feet? Stall? Stay back? Hide?
In other words, is He like us in relationships? If not, then what is He like?
When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees. Then the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” (Gen 3:8-9, NLT).
Is this right? Does God really seek us out? Does He really walk toward us even when we’re hiding from Him? Is this how God acts in relation to us?
At the same time, it’s not just the physical act of walking toward Adam and Eve, is it? God also speaks. He talks with us even when we are trying to hide from Him.
Often, when we look at this story of Adam and Eve, we focus on the actions of the man and woman. Don’t get me wrong, they’re important. However, it’s equally vital to focus on God. Because how He treats them is the same way He treats us.
The thing is, many of us don’t think God acts this way. It’s a main reason we live in a constant state of hiding and hesitating in our relationships.
Despite the way we may feel or think, God is always seeking us. Walking toward us. He’s always looking for us. At no time does He hesitate. Or hide. Like with Adam and Eve, He takes us seriously, by looking for us in love. In the same way, for the same reason, God speaks to us too.
Reflective Response: This week, could you take 20 minutes to pause from your busyness? When you do, say to God, “I know You’re seeking me even when I’m hesitating and trying to hide from You and others. What would You like to say to me today?”
Then, be still. Listen to His voice of love. As you do, write down what He says.
